TKAM: Chapter 1-3 Focus

Things to discuss:

 Describe the Cunninghams
 What impression do we get of school: narrow minded, humiliating.
  • Scout rebels against this because she is too innocent to recognize that you have to play the system.  She is the mockingbird teaching the others to sing?
 How Scout is portrayed as a child
  • “I’d go off and drown myself ….then they’d be sorry."
 Why does Walter pour syrup on everything and why does Atticus get angry at
Scout for noticing?
 Describe the Ewells
 What sort of man is Atticus?
  • Fiercely non-racist and a true democrat – law is the king, civil liberties must always be respected.
