MYP
MYP students are preparing for the Midsummer's Night Dream presentation, so they are reading, discussing, and dissecting Shakespeare's play. Each grade level is taking a different perspective when studying the play-- and completing tasks with criteria that relates to Language A units of study.
MYP 6-- doing research on Shakespeare
MYP 9-- reading and clarifying the play (role playing/acting)
MYP 8 students are finishing THE OUTSIDERS-- their task sheets have been distributed, so the hard work is about to begin.

Writing, writing, and more writing...
PYP 4 students have had a rocky start in EAL. We have had numerous interruptions and timetable changes, but things are finally starting run more smoothly. We have started independent reading contracts, writing logs and journals, and began the ever exhausting task of grammar skills!
The PYP 4 students have a lot to work on between their regular class work and EAL assignments. At this point in time, most activities in EAL have been supporting and complimenting what is being done in the regular classroom setting. However, at the start of the NEW YEAR-- students will be working more intensively on their communication (written, oral, and using grade-level appropriate vocabulary) and reading skills. The activities and lesson objectives will be similar to what is being discussed in their homeroom classes, but will be expanded upon and more individualized.

ABC's and Word Families
PYP 1 students have been "on the go" in EAL. They have been working at stations every week-- practicing their alphabet, letter sounds, sight words, written communication and idea development, and word patterns. It is amazing how much they have grown in the short time that they have been in EAL. Their independent and small group skills have come a long way since September.
Right now, students are working on word families and being able to retell stories that utilize word sort/phonic skills. The Three Little Pigs, The ABC Family, and BOO! are a few of the students' favorite stories read in class. As a result of these stories, students have become "SUPER READERS" and enjoy going on adventures with Super Why and his fellow reading partners.
The students will begin a reader's theater at the start of the New Year, so keep an eye out for HOMEWORK! Yes, the PYP 1 students will finally get homework and readers for practice at home!

Flat Stanley
PYP 3 students have been readying their FLAT Students for the long trek to America and Azerbaijan. Many of the activities and lessons have focused on vocabulary development, reading skills and strategies, and written communication-- thus Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown has been our focal book.
The students have really become good independent readers! They respond, share, and clarify text elements as a group and within their teacher conferences. They have also begun to write with more details that are focused and informative.
Right now the FLAT students receiving final touches, letters and summaries are being written. Hopefully the FLAT students will be in the mail before break.

Stone Soup
PYP 2 students have been discussing and developing language that has largely been centered around the story STONE SOUP by Jon Muth. We began the unit building knowledge about seasons, and then moved to communities, and finally on to foods we eat. Students have been journaling, sorting vocabulary, practicing phonics skills, reading, and developing story element skills. A lot of verbal communication is involved in the lessons, along with singing and hands-on activities that promote a stronger retention of the vocabulary and lesson objectives.
We are getting ready to end the long unit by creating our own story books and STONE SOUP. However, first the students need to recognize that stories can and will have many different versions.

What is EAL?
Welcome to EAL with Miss Clancy! EAL means 'English as an Additional Language'. It is a class that is primarily dedicated to supporting the language development of students whose mother tongue is that other than English. This blog will have activities, guides, explanations, and extensions to classroom lessons which will support English acquisition for PYP and MYP at Raha.
